What making it safe involves
Make-safe is not a repair and we will not pretend it is. It is whatever stops water and stops things falling: loose ridge or verge tiles taken down and stacked, a reinforced tarpaulin battened over an opening rather than weighted with bricks, a torn flat roof sheeted and taped at the laps, gutters cleared where an overflow is doing the damage indoors. Where the roof cannot be worked on safely in the dark or in high wind, we say so — nobody's ceiling is worth someone coming off a roof at midnight.
Inside the house, move what you can out of the way and put a container under the drip. If a ceiling is bulging with trapped water, piercing it deliberately with a screwdriver at the lowest point drains it into a bucket, which is far better than the whole panel coming down at once. Switch off lighting circuits in the affected room until it has dried out.

Photographs, dates and the claim
If you intend to claim, the evidence starts before we tidy up. Photograph the damage from the ground before anything is moved, note the date and rough time, and keep any tiles that came down. Storm damage claims usually turn on whether the weather was severe enough on that specific day, so a date matters more than a description.
We photograph everything from roof level during the make-safe visit, and the written quote that follows itemises what failed and what putting it right involves. That is normally what an insurer asks for.
